Telemetry system for weather observation via GPRS on mobile network

This project is a collaboration between Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII) and Advanced Info Service (AIS) Public Company, Limited.

Background

HAII has developed a compact and easy-to-setup automatic weather measurement system that transmits data through mobile phone network. This is done through collaboration with Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited or AIS, a mobile service provider. 210 telemeters were installed at AIS cellular sites all over the country in the project called “Automatic meteorological data measurement through mobile network for weather monitoring”.

On Tuesday 19th October 2004, on the occasion of “The Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne”, HAII and AIS submitted this project to His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej during the National Science and Technology Fair at IMPACT Arena, Exhibition and Convention Center, Nonthaburi Province.

In 2006, AIS expanded the telemetry system and had a total of 374 telemeter staions covering the north, central, east, northeast, and upper south of Thailand. It also collaborated with HAII to provide data service through the website www.Thaiwater.net to expand the benefit of data use to general public.

Objectives

1. To celebrate the occasion of “The Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne” and to demonstrate his talent in the information technology and water resource management.

2. To provide weather data service (rainfall, temperature, relative humidity and air pressure) publicly through the internet network.

3. To promote the use of data for the water resource management in every level from government sector, private sector, to community level.

Goal

Follow His Majesty the King’s initiatives in the country development, especially in solving Thailand water resource management in a sustainable way. This requires a good database and technology developed inside the country.

Installation sites

Cover north, central, east, northeast, and upper south of Thailand, total 374 stations.

Expected Outcomes

  1. Accurate and reliable weather data presented through the internet network, i.e., rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, and air pressure.
  2. Governmental agencies, private sectors, and the public can easily access and use the data.
  3. The data was utilized for water resource planning and management as well as disaster preparation, for both flooding and drought.

This project is a collaboration between Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII) and Advanced Info Service (AIS) Public Company, Limited.
